What I have read ….

without comments

A selection of books I have read at some point in time.  Being “good” is  not necessarily a requirement for them to be listed here.  Order is entirely random, don’t look for a pattern :)

  • Lace – Shirley Conran. Totally cheesey but has the immortal line “which one of you bitches is my mother ?”
  • The Colditz Story – Patrick Reid. This one is a firm favourite with me, and although not in my “collection” at present I will snap it up at some point.  For those of you not in the know, Colditz was a maximum security German Prisoner Of War camp in World War 2.  it was meant to be “escape proof” (asking for trouble if you ask me).  The book tells the story of the escape of various prisoners of various nationalities from Colditz, including the author Patrick Reid, and the former politician Airey Neave.  A book about a POW camp might sound a bit “grim” but there is humour in the story, in the telling of some of the prisoner’s antics.  It’s worth every penny of …. Errr 1p (at time of writing), get it here.
  • Practical Cookery – Various authors. The catering college student’s “bible”.  A definitive book originated by the great Victor Ceserani (ok, some of you are going to say “who ?”, but trust me most chefs know him), this is a straight forward book teaching the fundamentals of catering, and is also of use to anyone who wants to learn to cook at home as well.  It covers all the “classic” basics, through poaching eggs, white sauce, meat, you name it there’s in there.  My copy is a bit “ancient” (1990’s) but it’s well used and a superb book.  You can see an up to date edition here.
