What I watch ….
Just a selection of what I’ve watched or been watching on television or DVD or at the cinema ….
- The Onedin Line – Excellent drama about a Liverpool based shipping line which made Peter Gilmore and Anne Stallibrass famous. Also features an early appearance from Jane Seymour. Sadly seems to be very hard to locate on DVD.
- Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy – Superb, outstanding. Alec Guinness and Bernard Hepton excel. An excellent adaptation of the John Le Carre novel. Superb espionage “yarn” (and it’s so NOT James Bond or Spooks), this is an excellent and realistic (probably, much more so than Bond etc) tale of life in the MI6 during the cold war. From the era of quality BBC drama without irritating background music, and with strong plots. DVD is right here.
- Kessler – The follow up “spin off” series following Secret Army. Atrocious drivel and boring in my opinion. It’s here if you want to check it out, personally I wouldn’t bother, but I guess it takes all types
- Secret Army – Now this is good TV drama. It starts off slow but once you get into it it’s most watchable and refreshingly uncluttered with “background” music. The DVDs appear to be in “sell off” (eg the last 6 months before deletion when no more are manufactured) so I’d get in quick or check out eBay. There’s 3 series in all, can be found here, here, here and here.
- Colditz – A very very good drama from the 1970’s. I’ve recently watched this (it’s not massive, just 2 shortish series in all) and it’s excellent, highly recommended.
- The X Files (finally) – Well I’ve now seen all 9 seasons, and honestly …. It’s ok but there’s no way on earth am I watching it again. And what’s with that weird episode with Burt Reynolds in ? That’s seriously bizarre. On the plus side Gillian Anderson was the sexiest woman on the planet by the end …. You can check out the X Files right here. For the record it’s all watchable enough, but it’s not one for your DVD collection, your experiences may differ.
- Doctor Who – Yes Doctor Who is back and this time it’s Matt Smith and it’s not half bad either. More on this in the main blog soon, DVD is here.
- The X Files (still) - I’ve not watched a lot of TV lately as I’ve been reading some John Gray, however, I have seen a few more X Files. Of particular note are the Postmodern Prometheus in season 5 and the Nazi episode in series 6. Gillian Anderson is getting sexier by the season ….
- The Dog Whisperer – Not a big fan myself, but the family seem to have it on several times a day. Personally I reckon it’s like Harry Potter films: once you’ve seen one (or two at a push) you’ve pretty much seen them all. If you do like the Dog Whisperer, you can check it out here.
- The X Files (Series 1 & 2) – When this was first on television I didn’t watch it. I’ve recently started watching it from the beginning. Series 1 looks a little dated now (in my opinion) but it’s not bad and worth watching. Gillian Anderson is looking good. Series 2 is better, although the “Humbug” episode is just plain daft in my opinion.
- Rick Stein (Assorted) – If you’ve not seen Rick Stein on TV he’s an eccentric chef who enthuses about fish all the time. I probably watch too much cookery on TV but Rick Stein is rather entertaining. Check out Rick Stein’s Far Eastern Odyssey.
Steve
