The Godfather – Film Review
There are seminal films, there are cult films, there are films which are simply amazing ….
Paramount’s film The Godfather is based on the book of the same name by Mario Puzo. The story begins with Don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando) overseeing the wedding of his daughter after the war from which his son Michael Corleone has just returned. Don Vito as ageing patriarch of the Corleone family wishs to transfer the family “business” to his son Michael (who is reluctant to follow in his father’s footsteps.) The story unfolds as times change for the Corleone family and they enter a new era, which involves drug dealing and the family is torn apart by a violent mafia war.
The acting in The Godfather is simply superb. Marlon Brando, always a good actor, is at his pinnacle as Don Vito Corleone and Al Pacino and James Caan also make first class appearances as the Don’s sons. In fact I can’t fault anyone’s acting in the film and everyone makes a first class appearance. Also stunning is the movie’s soundtrack, with some superb tracks really capturing the atmosphere of the post war American Mafia. The film won 3 oscars, 19 other assorted wins and various nominations. It is also the second highest rated film ever on the Internet Movie Database (number 1 is The Shawshank Redemption) at 9.1 out of 10. Personally 9.1 out of 10 isn’t high enough, because the film is flawless and perfect. I give it 10 out of 10 and I doubt I’ll ever give another film 10 out of 10.
If you haven’t seen the film then you really are missing out on the greatest film ever in my opinion. Films don’t come any better than this, and at only £15.99 for the trilogy you really really can’t go wrong, ask Santa for it NOW.
